I also prefer  your  option B. For 23 cm and 13 cm I'm using analogue down
converters for the  50MHz IF of HPSDR.  The phase noise of the LO should not
extend -130 dBc  @ 10 kHz offset, not so easy to achieve for frequencies
above 1 GHz. In my case a 138,444 MHz VCXO, built with a JFET and a 2 stage
multiplier does this job: phase noise around - 137 dBc at 10 kHz offset.
