I have heard eSSB and the irate exchanges it sometimes causes, you can 
not only hear the splatter, you can see it in a panadaptor display.
Same irritation with audio processing, often sounding like the guy is 
talking from the bottom of a sound proofed cesspit.

With a simple softrock RX I can copy normal SSB very well in <2KHz.
