No surprises that python was chosen for HiQSDR.
Jim Ahlstrom who is the author of quisk is a renowned authority on
python and has published books on the subject.

quisk was originally written to support Jim's ft245 transceiver design
and latterly used to support his N2ADR transceiver published in QEX
which formed the basis of DB1CC's HiQSDR. He later developed qvna to
add VNA function to his N2ADR design and HiQSDR.

When I was looking for Linux software to support Softrock, I contacted
Jim as quisk seemed the easiest way to go. With information I provided -
emails back and forth - and eventually a Softrock Ensemble II RXTX I
donated allowed him to test quisk on Softrock himself and so shortening
the development chain.

As python is an interpreted language it is slow on embedded systems
being very heavy on CPU resources but works well if the video processing
is done using a GPU. On the ODROID-X without mali400 GPU support, quisk
outputs sound and video in short blotches so that not even a short CW
character can be read. With mali400 GPU support quisk works fine so it's
possible to use a small embedded system with quisk. May be a Mark II
HiQSDR incorporating a SoCFPGA would be just fine.
73 ... Sid.
