Have you connected the Metis directly to the RPi3 and tried the discovery?
The discovery in both the new and old protocols only work when the PC
and the radio are on the same local IP network. The discovery uses both
IP and Ethernet broadcast addresses. Ethernet broadcast to the same
local network. The discovery does not work through an IP forwarder
(router). An IP router does not forward IP broadcast traffic.
I have not had issues with PiHPSDR discovering Metis and Hermes. I have
noticed issues the Hermes-lite responding to PiHPSDR. I have played with
PiHPSDR on a RPi3, a PC, a Tinker board, and a odroid-xu4.
Some network devices will block and or drop IPv4 packets that are sent
to the broadcast address of 255.255.255.255. Blocking broadcast traffic
is a basic security feature.
Some "smart" Ethernet switches will drop Ethernet sent to the Ethernet
broadcast address. This as also a basic security feature.
I would not recommended passing the traffic thought a network firewall.
Both versions of the protocol are a real time protocol. The radio
generates a large amount of data.
Directly connecting the radio to the RPI3 or a PC is the best way to
make sure that none of the data from the radio is lost.
